First Impression – Is It That Important?

We have been brought up to accept that first impression (focusing more on physical appearance and personal expectation rather than overall personality) is very important. However, that's not what it is meant to be. Sometimes, we need to know more about a person and his/her ability with open minds & without coming into final judgment upon first exposure. In this case, a person with a slurred speech may not be able to express the words well but she has the ability to fare well in other areas such as writing. It's all about "don't judge a book by its cover". Nothing is perfect in this world, isn't it? This is a real life, an inspiring story of a friend of mine who faced setbacks due to her neurological disorder…Living with a neurological disorder

Is first impression that really important? I experienced some crouches too due to my quiet nature. During a job interview, an interviewer once mentioned that I don’t look like I graduated from Mass Communication field as she thought that mass communication graduates are outgoing. Well, that’s the perception fed to us all these while, I would say.

However, there is a worst scenario. It happened last year when the assistants at my workplace found out that I would be appointed to lecture Diploma class in the following semester. Without much thought, one of them bluntly said straight to my face, “Huh? You’ll become a lecturer? You graduated from Mass Communication? I don’t believe it! I can’t accept it!” Thankfully, I am fortunate to have found angels who believe that I am able to make it through despite my shortcomings. Furthermore, I had been assigned to edit and translate articles from Chinese into English even though I could only read and understand basic Chinese, and I think I did exceptionally well given my knowledge and skill in Chinese language. Sometimes, we need opportunities to path our way and show to the world that first impression does not mean anything, anything at all. Often times, we need to know a person better before we reach the conclusion on what type of person he/she is.

Having just read another enlightening article “Soulboy: An Interview with Khalil Fong”, it dawned on me that many of us already set our parameters and perception even before we expose ourselves to new things, to new environments, to new ideas. By doing this, we already resisting change and prefer to remain static when what we want is a change in others. “Before learning and understanding the reality and parameters of a new environment, they begin to point out what they see as flaws and love to complain. In some cases they may have been right, but in many cases they were also very far off the mark and this display often magnifies their own flaws and shortcomings. Although we are all prone to err, we should always try to be mindful of ourselves.”

This is the reality, our created reality. And this is the reality that we need to embrace for the rest of our lives unless we see through into our soul and make changes, no matter how small it is.
